Decision Puts Republicans and Courts in Bind with Fastest Growing Voting Bloc in the Country

WASHINGTON—A federal district court in Texas handed down a decision today in the 26 state lawsuit Texas, et al. v. United States. Federal Judge Andrew Hanen, who is known for making anti-immigrant statements, made his decision on this nativist lawsuit against the immigration initiatives announced by President Obama last November. Kica Matos, Director of Racial Justice and Immigrant Rights at the Center for Community Change, and spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), released the following statement:

“This deplorable ruling by an out of touch Republican-appointed judge is a political stunt orchestrated by the anti-immigrant faction of the GOP.  it is contrary to what is right for this country’s economy and what the majority of Americans want and support. This decision may delay the implementation of deferred action programs like DACA and DAPA, but it will not stop them. All it does is put Republicans on the wrong side of history yet again. Americans believe it is right for immigrant families to be able to stay together, and for all people living in the U.S. to be able to continue to do so without fear.

Make no mistake: this ruling is temporary and will not prevail. Eventually, the administrative reforms announced by the White House last year will be implemented and millions of immigrants will be able to apply for work permits. Judge Hanen’s decision may be an attempt to scare our families, but our communities will continue to fight back by getting ready for deferred action programs and immediately applying when DACA and DAPA become available.

We are confident that soon millions of immigrants will be able to apply for work permits through the deferred action programs and have the chance to live, work, and stay in the United States with their families. As immigrant families and allies in the immigrants’ rights movement continue to prepare and fight for a permanent solution for all 11 million undocumented immigrants contributing to this country, Republicans need to remember that our communities will not forget. What may seem like a victory for anti-immigrant factions of the GOP is truly a loss that will hurt them in the future.”
