(WASHINGTON)— The Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM) released the following statement in reaction to the mid-term elections:
“Our movement is united with a single message for President Obama: you must act now to keep our families together,” said Kica Matos, spokesperson for FIRM. “Big and bold administrative relief from President Obama that keeps families together is a moral imperative.
For our communities, immigration is not just a political play. It is about kids being able to stay with their parents, and keeping families together. The fate of millions of families hangs on the balance and the immigrant community is watching for President Obama to take action in the days and weeks to come.
Immigrant and Latino voters continue to fiercely demand an end to family separations. In Colorado, Cory Gardner only won by carrying a reasonable and practical message on immigration reform—this is a lesson to Republicans everywhere. According to a poll released by Latino Decisions, 67 percent said immigration was one of the most important issues in the midterm elections. For our communities, immigration reform is a gateway to being heard on every other issue.
Policymakers everywhere need to realize that while the 2014 election may have been fought in mostly conservative states and states with a limited number of immigrant and Latino voters, the 2016 election is the opposite. It is a presidential election and the Senate map will be fought in places where our votes will be decisive.”
