Rep. King Serves as Fourth House Member to Support Citizenship after Concentrated Pressure from FIRM

(WASHINGTON)— Following extensive focused efforts from the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), Congressman Peter King (R-NY) has come out in support of immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship.

“I am happy that Congressman Peter King supports comprehensive immigration reform, including a pathway to citizenship,” said Maria Magdalena Hernandez, a member of the FIRM group Make the Road New York. “Throughout these last months, he has shown that he is listening to his changing constituency. Today I congratulate him and celebrate his position, and ask him to elevate his voice even higher amongst Republican leadership, so that we can get a comprehensive immigration reform bill this year.”

Rep. King is one of four GOP members of the House to come out in support of citizenship after persistent, concentrated pressure from FIRM, following similar announcements of support by Representatives Mike Coffman (R-CO), Daniel Webster (R-FL) and David Valadao (R-CA).

FIRM and its member organizations have been harnessing the power of immigrant families from across the country since day one to keep the pressure on the House to pass a bill. From rallying in the streets to engaging in online actions to lobbying in congressional offices and engaging in civil disobedience, our families have shown Congress that they are a force to be reckoned with. And as we move deeper into congressional recess, our actions and our voices will only become louder and more powerful.

“Our families’ voices will drown out those of our opponents,” said Deepak Bhargava, Executive Director of the Campaign for Community Change. “We have scheduled more events in states like New York than our opponents are planning throughout the entire country.”

“Rep. King’s support comes as FIRM families are ramping up the pressure on the House,” Bhargava continued. “The beginning of congressional recess marked the beginning of 40 Days of Action and Prayer. As members of Congress relax and enjoy their vacations, our families continue to live in fear. We will be here as a constant reminder that each day that Congress does not pass a bill, 1,100 families are torn apart. This is only the beginning of a recess that will see family voices defeat the proponents of family separation.”

Rep. King is one of 22 Republican members of the House to come out in support of citizenship. America’s Voice has compiled a comprehensive list of these members.
