Cornyn Amendment, House Vote to Deport DREAMers, Rep. Labrador Walking out of Immigration Talks All Signal the GOP has Forgotten November

(WASHINGTON)—Kica Matos, spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), released the following statement in response to the numerous signals Republicans have given this week that they have turned their backs on immigrant and Latino voters:

“With the GOP party brand already on the brink of oblivion among Latino and immigrant voters, Republicans made three big pushes in the wrong direction this week.

Republican Sen. John Cornyn’s cynical attempt to hold our families hostage to billions in ransom money for his state is reverberating through our communities, and we had once hoped he might join the call for a practical solution that keeps families together.

Last night Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho) walked out on the House bipartisan immigration talks over their refusal to include drastic language requiring immigrants to buy their own full price health insurance or be deported. Latino and immigrant voters, who will punish the GOP in record numbers if they undermine this bill, will be triply motivated by this brazen attack on the health of their families.

Finally, the U.S. House of Representatives today approved an amendment by Rep. Steve King (R-IA) that, if passed by the U.S. Senate, would deny the U.S. Department of Homeland Security funding to administer the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) initiative. Announced nearly one year ago, DACA exercises prosecutorial discretion, permitting qualifying young people who entered the United States as undocumented immigrants during their childhood to remain lawfully in the U.S. for two years and obtain work authorization during that period.

The end of DACA would put hundreds of thousands of DREAM students at risk of immediate deportation.

Nothing could possibly destroy the Republican brand with Latino voters more directly than such a blatant attack on our children and families. Right now the face of the GOP in our communities is anti-family, anti-children, anti-citizenship and anti-bipartisanship.”
